The Human Potential Running Series has officially adopted a Pregnancy Deferral Policy to accommodate women who may become pregnant after registering for one of our races. We have even gone a step further to accommodate significant others of a pregnant woman with unexpected pregnancy complications. The Pregnancy Complications Deferral is available to any significant other of a pregnant female regardless of gender or gender role. These new policies read as follows:
“Should you register for a race and then become pregnant following your registration and prior to race day; you are welcome to defer your entry to a future edition of the same race if you wish. To obtain the deferral, please send a Pregnancy Deferral Request to us at [email protected] up to 30 days prior to the race, and include written confirmation of your pregnancy signed by a physician, registered midwife, or other medical professional. We reserve the right to require additional proof of pregnancy and may reject a deferral request if the documentation verifying pregnancy is deemed insufficient. Women who obtain a Pregnancy Entry Deferral will be granted automatic entry into any one of the next two editions of the same race after the initial year deferred. If a woman becomes pregnant again during a Pregnancy Entry Deferral period, she may request another Pregnancy Entry Deferral. This would permit her to defer her race entry for the two-year period allowed by the most recent Pregnancy Entry Deferral request. Should for some unforeseen circumstance the race deferred from is cancelled or no longer exists, the deferral will then be good (and only then) for any other HPRS race of equal distance or lesser value. No refund of entry fees will be administered under any circumstance.
Furthermore, we also welcome Pregnancy Complications Deferral requests from significant others (male, female, or other) of pregnant individuals who experience pregnancy complications. The same rules as above will apply to the significant other with regards to a deferral request with written confirmation of complications signed by a physician, registered midwife, or other medical professional; with the exception that this type of deferral may be requested no less than 15 days out from the registered race.
An individual can be granted no more than two deferral requests.”
Human Potential Running Series Race Director Sherpa John stated, “It really is long past time that our sport rally behind female runners, and also recognize that not every pregnant woman has a “husband.” I think everyone can agree that not every pregnancy is planned, and caring for the health of an expectant mother and her baby is far more important than a race. Furthermore, it’s not always the pregnant female whose life is deeply affected by pregnancy and the host of complications that can occur. After all, the odds of any of us even being here is 400 Trillion to one. I really feel that our new policy continues to showcase our commitment to female runners, and their life partners, in a way that is reasonable, responsible, and necessary.”
This is just the next step in the Human Potential Running Series’ commitment to female athletes in the sport of trail and ultra running, as well as recognizing the ever evolving family roles in today’s society. Human Potential continues to cater to and celebrate the female athlete in the following ways: A female “running-woman” logo on the shirts of our female HPRS Members as well as the female logo present on select race shirts and within each race’s runner’s manual, women’s specific sizing for all race shirts, deliberate and fair race coverage of women equal to or greater than men’s coverage, equal or greater representation of female athletes in online and print advertising, and earrings to the 1st place female in each of our Fairplay series of races. In 2017, HPRS also adopted a policy in support of transgender athletes.
