The Human Potential Running Series (HPRS) has made an aggressive overhaul of its volunteer program heading into its’ biggest race of the year thus far. Starting with September’s Sangre de Cristo Ultras, HPRS has replaced its’ credit and comp earning volunteer program with a more robust program that is ultimately easier for volunteer’s to understand what they’re receiving in exchange for their time.
Previously, HPRS awarded credits on a point based system that allowed runners to register for future events with credits earned. Each race distance in the series was worth a predetermined number of credits volunteers could trade in for a comp entry. Should the volunteer not have enough credits for a full on comp, they could trade their credits in for a discounted race entry instead. Under the new program, volunteers are being paid in race credits to the tune of $10-$20 per hour, applied to their Ultrasignup account for automatic discounts on HPRS Brand events.
“The old system worked for awhile, but it was a lot of work on the backend and caused a bit of confusion with some folks. I also didn’t feel like we were truly expressing our gratitude for our volunteers, or offering full value for their time. I trust that this updated program will extend my gratitude for our dedicated volunteers quite well. You give our community of runners your time, I give you straight up credit to use on future events. This isn’t something we were able to offer in previous years, but we’ve grown enough and we’re in a healthy enough place to share the love of running with those who share their love with our runners.”
Under the new program:
• Volunteers will earn $10 in HPRS Race Credits on Ultrasignup.com for every hour worked at an HPRS Race.
• Those who volunteer for 9 or more hours in a single event, will earn a $40 bonus credit in addition to whatever is earned for their hours worked.
• Volunteering between the hours of 10pm and 6am with earn volunteers $20 in HPRS Race Credits for each hour worked. Volunteers who provide services as Medical Staff, Course Markers or Sweeps will also earn credits at the $20 per hour rate.
• HPRS will continue to offer a straight up complimentary race entry to any runner who completes a Trail Work day with HPRS.
Runners can also obtain the credits earned by any family and friends they bring to a race who fill in any volunteer gaps at the RD’s direction; providing the family member or friend performs at least 4 hours of dedicated work and wishes to not use the credits for themselves. Volunteers who put in 32 or more hours of their time between the 2019 Razorback Running Revival and 2020 Indian Creek Fifties will earn the coveted #Adversity Army T-Shirt.
Through the 2019 Volunteer campaign, HPRS has had the help of over 168 volunteers who have provided nearly 2,100 hours of work. HPRS is still looking for volunteers for their upcoming Sangre de Cristo Ultras on the weekend of September 21st in Westcliffe, CO. The near sold out event offers distances of 100-Miles, 100k, 50-Miles, 50k, and 27k. Last year’s event handled 85 total registrations, setting the baseline for this year’s incredible growth of over 265 registrations handled. The 6th Annual Indian Creek Fifties, NEW Razorback Running Revival, and the Sawmill Trail Runs will round out the 2019 HPRS Schedule. Volunteers are needed for each of the remaining 4 events.
